I. Another idea that Ernst tossed out at this time involved the Marx Brothers. The film would begin by following a man climbing stairs and going into a room. His wife is lying in bed and Groucho is hiding inside a closet. “Believe it or not,” Groucho would say, “I’m waiting for a streetcar.” At that moment, a streetcar would clang into the frame and Groucho would jump on as the streetcar rolled out of the scene. Although Lubitsch correctly grasped the essentially surrealistic, cartoonish basis of the Marxian character, Groucho didn’t care for the material, and the fascinating prospect of Lubitsch directing the Marx Brothers never materialized.
